Traditional Cornish Granite Floors
At Cornish Lime Builders, we specialise in the restoration and installation of traditional Cornish granite floors — a beautiful and increasingly rare form of craftsmanship that was once a familiar feature of farmhouses, cottages, barns, manor houses and other historic buildings throughout Cornwall.
Traditional granite flooring is very different from modern flagstones or thin-cut paving. These are often substantial pieces of locally sourced granite, sometimes up to a foot (300mm) thick, giving the finished floor an incredible sense of permanence, character and authenticity. Each stone has its own colour, texture, weathering and history, creating a floor that simply cannot be replicated with modern manufactured materials.
We are one of the few companies still able to source and lay these traditional granite floors using appropriate historic methods. Finding suitable stone is increasingly difficult, and laying it correctly requires considerably more than simply placing slabs onto a modern concrete base. The stones are heavy, irregular and often individually shaped, meaning that every floor has to be carefully prepared and each piece set and bedded to create a stable, durable and sympathetic finish.
Where appropriate, we use traditional lime-based bedding and construction techniques, allowing the floor and surrounding historic fabric to work together rather than introducing unnecessarily hard modern materials into an old building. This is particularly important in traditional Cornish properties where breathability, moisture movement and compatibility with the existing structure are essential.
We take great pride in retaining and reusing original granite wherever possible. Where historic stones have been removed, we can often incorporate them back into the building, preserving not only their material value but also a tangible piece of the property’s history. When additional stone is required, our knowledge of traditional materials and local sources allows us to seek out suitable reclaimed and newly quarried granite with the right character and proportions.
A floor built to last for generations
A properly laid traditional granite floor is exceptionally durable. These floors were built for hard-working buildings — farmhouses, barns, workshops and entrances where they were expected to withstand generations of use. Their extraordinary thickness and density mean that, when correctly installed, they can provide a floor that will last for centuries rather than decades.
There is also something uniquely beautiful about walking across a floor made from enormous pieces of Cornish granite. The subtle variations in colour, the worn edges and marks left by generations of use give the finished floor a depth and authenticity that new manufactured flooring simply cannot reproduce.
